General Information
As OHECA Transportation committee chairperson, it is my responsibility to act as liaison between the OHECA board, the residents of Orange Hunt, and various county and state transportation agencies. The focus is not only maintaining and improving safety and appearance of our streets, but also to maintain property values.
It is these issues that prompted an initiative, driven by numerous complaints over a period of many years, to make certain streets in Orange Hunt community parking districts. This plan, sponsored by the Fairfax county board of supervisors and Fairfax county DOT, that prohibits the parking of boats, RVs, trailers, campers, etc. on Calico Ct., Conservation Dr., Cottontail Ct., Cutting Horse Ct., Huntsman Blvd., and Red Jacket Rd. The OHECA board decided to make this a phase 1 plan, with other streets to be added, provided we can get volunteers to solicit signatures on petitions generated by the Fairfax County Department of Transportation. As we go to press, the petitions for the above-mentioned streets have gone to the Fairfax Board of Supervisors for approval. Signs will then be installed along the streets notifying residents of the restricted parking areas.
Two other issues that are of concern to Orange Hunt residents are speeding and basketball hoops in the streets. The Fairfax county police are aware that we have some streets that have speeding problems and will set up speed traps periodically. Huntsman Blvd., in particular, where the speed limit changes from 40 mph to 25 mph once you cross Sydenstricker, is a troublesome area. Residents should be aware of the speed limits and report repeated instances of speeding to the police.
Basketball hoops are not to be placed on streets, which are owned and maintained by VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation). VDOT deals with complaints from residents on a case by case basis. To complain about the placement of hoops in the roadway, call VDOT at (703) 383-8368. This is VDOTs 24-hour customer service number and can also be used to get information on snow removal or to report road hazards, such as potholes, debris in the roads, damaged signs, etc..
This will be my 20th year as an Orange Hunt resident, and the beginning of my second year as transportation committee chairman. I am proud to represent my community by volunteering my time for such a worthwhile cause. I encourage you to contact me with any thoughts you may have to improve our wonderful community or to lend a hand.
